bobw
So, having read the links and Revisions article, and watched the videos a number of times, are there common terms and patterns that are used in Grids? As one of the Newbies I'll probably be in the front row, but having put some brain cells on the subject, I thought of a few things I'd like to see hold true: 1) KISS it (Keep it Simple Stupid) 2) Make it clear so we all know what to do 3) Be explicit. For instance "evens left" might be ambiguous; I'd assume you'd want to say "even Rows left". 4) Do we refer to positions as Rows / Columns? 5) If we ever split the Grid into multiple subgroups (say for dual circles), I imagine you'd split the group by taking multiple Rows together, and fly by the Row. This follows the usual Megafly convention where you mostly follow your mates to the left and right. So, any case, I just pondered here in the lack of any links or sources I can find. Felix? Anyone? A Grid manual? I'm particularly curious about standard figures/formations, and what do you do if you make formations such as concentric circles (say an 12 surrounding a 4). Is the convention that the inner four form a circle, or what?
Lauranyyfan
Hi Bob- I think the most important thing for any pilot to worry about for this Mega Fly is to be able to fly your own kite in all orientations. In the grid fly, it is of the utmost importance that you watch your own kite. If you take your eyes off of it, you will take a group of people out. It is a bit different as compared to the team fly where we follow each other. In the grid, we are all real close to each other and really need to "own thy hover". With the above being said, the calling will be clear and concise, so no worries. I don't know if we will come close to any kind of balls, just let it play out and have fun! Felix
<snip>I'm particularly curious about standard figures/formations, and what do you do if you make formations such as concentric circles (say an 12 surrounding a 4). Is the convention that the inner four form a circle, or what? There is no manual! With a grid of 4 x 4 the outer kite face out and morph from the square to a circle. Very little movement is required. The remaining 4 kites turn to face out diagonally, job done... The idea is that individual kites in the grid should remain close to the centre of the wind window. Lateral or vertical threads are good for starters. Felix
Choccy
from the photos I can see we need to stagger some and place the newbies in front as to give them a way out when panic sets in. Hi Scott, funnily enough the ppl who are at the very back, eg fly the highest path have the safest route out. Bristol is a clear example of this. And being at the front is only good for certain moves. If your inverted hover isn't cracked, then being at the very front is not a good idea for newbies, but it depends on the routine. So many variables for you all to experience Even the most experienced grid flyers freak out but in USA I'm sure you won't have issues of lack of space. Scott Weider
Herding Cats, Here goes nothing! From my math we have 14 potential just from what I read here. I know of a couple more who are not on the forum, who might be reluctant to (get tangled) join in. So If 12 PPl get comfortable with the positions It will look enticing to the sidelines. Does anyone have a BULLHORN? Having the 9 IQUAD flyers would change the dynamic for sure, I could just watch, But there are NOT walking through that door. Their having there own fly 3000 miles away ( anyone wonder why) ( new move : Pack up and GO) So, lets get on with it. Lets make the most of what we have and at least try. unicorns and rainbows!! sounds like work, kinda like chief judging....... so much for just play on the agenda! reminds me of an old Surfing phase " Should've Been Here Yesterday" MOVIE QUOTE ??? Off Topic!
Felix
Herding Cats, Here goes nothing!<snip> Go for it Scott. I'm looking forward to hearing/seeing how it goes! I think we were 12 at Dunstable the first time out early in 2008... Memory has gone a bit hazy though! Felix

Thanks for the photography, Having flown in the very spot to a seemingly naked skyline. That one photo is worth a million! That skyline and the statue are the backdrops for a few of us as our home field and it is to say the least, awe inspiring each time we fly there. I also travel to work daily thru the WTC site which in and of itself makes for an interesting dynamic. That photo is indeed a beautiful testimony to what once was! KiteLife
That's always worked out best for me Scotty... Rotate the pilots through smaller groups, getting them acclimated, then drop in the for the really big flies. Especially if the caller hasn't had extensive experience handling teams that big, it's good for them too.
