Go on Gary, you know you want a set in green for one of those warm beaches that you and the rest of TFS frequent! :)

Nice one Baz - so you can do separate port (red) and starboard (green) handle sets now - maybe that would reduce the number of "no, the other right!" calls heard on the field...

Baz:

Thinking I'd like to try making some handle sets like yours. Did you use Gr. 6061 aluminum rod or something else, and how did you "handle" the polishing and anodizing?

I can come by the handle stock fairly easily but will need to take the rod sections to an anodizing company to do for me, and I'm curious what to tell them to do. Is bending the rods after anodizing a bad idea? confused_1.gif

Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks,

Hi Liketofly

In England we have T6 6082 3/8" diameter rod

the polishing was done on a bench grinder with polishing mops and soaps

anodising was done professionally - to preserve the shine they were anodised with a one minute etch - this doesnt eat into the aluminium too much and keeps the shine

the rods were machined and bent, then drilled, polished and finally anodised - I wouldnt recommend bending AFTER anodising

I hope this is of help

good winds to you

Baz

Hi Tom

that looks like fishing rod grip - i would imagine it should be ok for rev handles

Yep, Mooseskin makes the green camo in EVA.

I've tried several different colors of EVA and found most colors to be too slippery and too hard for my liking. The lighter colors were a little softer, but still too slippery for me. However, my son loves his EVA grips, so go figure.

Hyplon is more to my liking ... no slip and a "just right" softness. However, John B. complained that mine were too soft ... once again, go figure.

Cheers,

Tom

hi

please can you tell me how much this cost and if you do them as 11" not 13"

all the best stephen

Just thought I would share with you my now complete set of ultra no snag handles

starting from mirror polished to

purple,blue,gold and red anodised

all have a groove modification for the leaders to sit in making the line flush with the handle (all credit to Gary of The Flying Squad for the groove suggestion)

I made some handles using 3/8 aluminum rod. After cutting to lenght I rounded off the ends and drilled angled holes for the tails. Put the handle on with a small dab of contaqct cement. Knot one end of the tail and thread thru the hole then take a 3/8 (.375) vinyl end cap, melt a hole for the tail. Slide the cover onto the tail and on to the rod. Bend to shape. Tie your adjustment knots on the tails

The grips I got at Jans Net Craft in Maumee, Ohio. I paid $1.99 each at the store. They have the same feeling as REV handles. On line they are $1.85 plus shipping. http://www.jannsnetcraft.com/eva-foregrips/280177.aspx

I just received my set of Baz handles and they are absolutely fantastic! One thing I can't get over is how lightweight these handles are. It's a major improvement over the standard handles for the weight alone, let alone the excellent snag resistance. It really adds to the overall sensitivity and feeling of the kite on the lines. Love it! Anyone contemplating these... do it! You won't regret it. I used Laser Pro Gold 100# bridle line to make the leaders on mine, and it seems just the right diameter for grooves, too... perfectly flush. Thanks Baz for taking the time to craft these beauties! :blue-grin:

Oddly enough, I prefer heavier handles ... guess I'm weird :blushing:

I actually use my Rev no-snag handles (the ones Walt makes for Rev) for my indoor rev and WAY prefer the more solid feel of the handle when compared to the feather weight of the indoor handles.

I need a set of no-snags for my B2 and as yet, Rev don't make any ... so hitting up Baz for a custom set may still be on the cards (along with an indoor set) B)

I too prefer heavier handles, probably because that is what I have always used, but I have treated myself to a pair of No snag handles from Baz and have to say they are terrific, especially when the wind is light and you need a bit more "feel" plus he was able to do them with Purple foams that matched my new purple Rev smile.gif
