Felix
Have we worked out the logistics of 50+ kites laid out on the ground, prior to launch?Being unfamiliar with the fields at either Portsmouth or Bristol, I'm a bit apprehensive. The sky plan makes sense, but we've still got to keep 50+ sets of 120' lines out of harms way. We have a 'complete arena' at both events in addition to the main arenas! I am sure that we will be able to cope... I had considered the possibility of the initial launch being in both arenas but this would depend on the orientation of the arenas and the wind direction. We will have 'ground crew' and a 'field director' to assist. I am hoping that we can get 'talk-back' via the PA but this will need negociating with the organisers of both events. Felix
June 14th and 15th Blackheath, London. In preparation for the Portsmouth/Bristol event it is suggested that UK fliers (and any others as well) who hope to take part in the Mega Fly could meet at Blackheath. This is mainly directed at experienced individual fliers who need to familiarise themselves with the 'grid flying' proposal. However, experienced 'team fliers' would be encouraged to participate as the overall number of fliers is of the essence!!! I will use the Portsmouth/Bristol listing to record the participants and have attached the latest version to this message. Thanks Felix
Choccy
We've had a look at Felix's grid on paper and understand steps 1-11. Then step 12 gets interesting Can't wait to see it in reality. Are all the groups/lines of people staggered so that no one stands in front/behind the next group of people ? The photos weren't that clear. multi bursts and count-rotations will look stunning if the wind is kind for all.
Bazzer
36+ Kites needed a lot of space. Wide angle it is.I have attached a tentative plan. Apologies if I am not adhering to the exact notation used elsewhere. I am still in two minds about the 'get-in'. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks Felix All launch ,(in good wind) walk a staggered round the world,ie. 1st 6/7 follow to the right underneath turn. As you have your line of 6/7 walk forward and fly back under to clear lines. Then the next group and so on... Bazzer

I have just realised what you mean by staggered and the answer is no, at this stage we would be directly in line but would avoid moves where the the lines could interfere with the fliers in front. I mentioned elsewhere the possibility of establishing a protocol of landing the whole megateam with everyone taking a position 'just to the left' say of the flier in front. That is however for later when we have got the basics worked out in practice. Multi Bursts and 'partial' rotations are possible, I am sure. Then the next group and so on...Bazzer 'In Good Wind' is probably the key and in that situation I do not think that there is any issue as long as the fliers know what they are going to be doing. My problem would be with the width required for 'All Launch'. However let's say we went for the sequential 'fly up and turn to face right' as at Uchinada, do some 'Waves' maybe some parallel 'Team Based' stuff 'then' move into the grid format. (All this does of course need preparation....) I very much like the idea of counting off the fliers on the basis of the overall number but we need to be clear that formats may change if there are 36, 48, 49, 54 or 56 fliers. I had also wondered about setting up from both ends or possibly the centre. <grins> Felix
Bazzer
with that many and the size of arenas at Bristol it will probably be a line by line launch then a gradual walk down wind. I don't think a fifty+ line will fit. 10 mile beaches do have their plus points. Like you say it all depends on the wind. Come on Bristol don't give us one of those thermal days! We must all have positive thoughts for a good wind. Start thinking on it now. Bazzer

What 'mess'? <grins> I thought that the point was to plan ahead.... Stephen is 'planning' the routine! We have a field director at Portsmouth and Bristol to assist in the set-up once we see the situation on the ground. Having a designated arena as well as the main arena will help! Felix As soon as Monkey sends me the finished music (NUDGE) I will finish the program. All the events this year have taught me that simple is best and most effective. The grid seems to be the best way to fit everyone in the space but it will limit some of the figures that can be flown. Either way this is going to be a blast! We shall try some more at Blackheath and maybe try a dummy run if we can get 20 plus fliers together. So, over to you David.......... I have been advocating a combination of parallel team and grid flying and hope that this fits! I had, in the back of my mind, the idea, that with both arena spaces at 300ft square at both venues we should have adequate space. With Field Director and Field Crew signed up I thought that it would be possible to move the fliers from one area to the other if needs be. I do not remember the exact attendance figures at Bristol but suffice to say it is many thousands. On far too many occasions at Bristol The Decs have flown into the main arena ahead of a performance and flown out at the end. I am certainly not expecting this for the mega-team but it suggests that with the help of Field Crew and Field Director we are on a winner and as Stephen suggest, it will be a blast (even if we are not flying speed series kites). See you on Blackheath if not at Basingstoke. Felix

We can get a spot and a PA & and at least one guy on the mic who could call if needed, we could do the end of Saturday if no other time. Felix
Like the Mexican wave,Also we need to make sure who films has a wide angle lens !!! At Uchinada David Baldwin was filming and photographing iQuad. This was 'informally' on behalf of Drachen Foundation. Some of the stills have been published at http://www.flickr.com/photos/drachen/ I saw some of the Video at SASAKAWA Ryokan Hotel but nothing since. Masanobu Komuro videoed the quad competition and the quad demonstrations and has posted some of it on Youtube He sent me 3 DVDs!It would be good to know if anyone is setting out to do the equivalent for Portsmouth/Bristol. Thanks Felix

I hope to have a test run this Sunday if I am not able to fly (light wind is not my strong point yet).
