2009 International Event

With my spectator hat on (and I watched the Sunday Mega fly at Portsmouth ..oops) ... I want to see the big bursts, shapes and numbers ... they always get the ooooohhs .. how about a 30 kite blender :)

I see no problem with lateral/vertical pairs but it might get a bit confusing if we start doubling up the crossovers. However, now that the grid concept is established I see no reason why further invention should not be applied. (obviously, <grins>)

My only, ongoing concern is, when and where do we get the opportunity to get everyone together again! Hence this thread...

Dont pretend you don't know the song .. I found a pair of fishnet stockings in your room when you left

Oh, I know the song, I just wasn't sure of the proper title. You're welcome to wear them if you like.

I'm waiting for something via Photoshop from you now. Papa Smurf in fishnet stockings?

I say since we have 9 months to deliver this baby why not plan on a wildwood event anyhow ?

If there happens to be another in the US then so be it maybe some can go to that one as well.

USA is a big country somewhere in the middle at an established high attendance venue would increase the chances of more potential people becoming a part of it, many things need to be considered.

Accommodations for 1, Flying area, attendees, coordination and most of all easy access to and from major airports.

The UK being relatively small made for all that to be much easier for the locals and the few that flew in made up the extras.

If people from around the world decided to fly into the US getting a spot where as many local countrymen and women would be essential to make this the grand occasion its striving to be.

Just my 2 cents plus amicable tax's :kid_smartass:

I am getting worried now. There has been no response to my request regarding USA/Canada teams and/or the numbers of fliers who might commit.

Do they really exist or is this a European/Japanese thing?

On another level, it has been suggested that for light winds everyone should be flying Rev 1s <grins>

Heh, well, its vanishing small numbers but, lets see....

iQuad (US/Can) 6-10 members

180GO! (US) 4? members

Island Quad (Can) - 4? members

Too Much Fun (US) - 3 members.

These are teams that I know of specifically, I have no doubt there's more given the huge resurgence in quad flyers, so, hopefully some will pipe up

So roughly speaking the European/Japanese contingent are 88 and the USA could get us to 100.

Should we concentrate our efforts on 2012 in London! <grins>

To be honest, expenses in mind, it'd be cheaper on the whole to have the event in Europe.

How about at the Berck sur Mer Festival?

Already a long-standing history of Rev mega team there, TONS of room, not too much time taken up by demos, etc.

Also, it will be their year off from the World Sport Kite Championships, they might want something else to highlight.

As many of us are familiar with this event I think that this would be a very good idea.

The Decs have wanted to do the full event for many years but have only ever managed to do a long weekend.

Gerard would want arena presentations but the opportunity to build the event would be fantastic.

Gets my vote for sure. I will go book vacation time in the morning....

Berck is high up on iQuad's "to do" list for 2009...

While we'll be cutting our schedule back by 40%-50% (30+ events in 2008), we'll be focusing on higher profile events where we can meet with more teams.

That, the top US events, and more Rev clinics of course. ;)

OK, so should we take this forward as a 'global' proposal to Gerard. Are any of the Japanese teams in a position to commit at this stage?

Both Berck & Kite Party at Huntington beach sound great to me, in fact any place that has a smooth wind & a gathering of rev flyers is good if finances permit.

Was fortunate to make the trip from the UK to Kite Party earlier this year with my family, have to say we all had a great time & Dave Shenkman from Kite Connection is a great guy.

Small selection of pics from out trip, hope you enjoy.

... We've got 180Go! ... but they're still pretty much fun teams at this point.

Well, not just a "fun team." Though they do have fun!

180GO! did 9 festivals in 4 different U.S. states this summer and they've been invited back to all of them and even have a postive bank balance!

No worries, no offense taken, just wanted to be clear. :blue_wink:

There's also a lot of individual U.S. fliers who aren't on teams that have the talents to do the grid format mega fly.

All that being said though, I'd like to go to France! I've always wanted to do Berck.

Heck, I'd enjoy going to any of the locations mentioned so far.

Berck is a fab festival, and definitely one of the best to visit in Europe. It's also fairly early on in the season so you're just bursting to get out and fly then after a looong winter of practice...

So long as the weather stays nice .. last year (well this year, 2008) it snowed on the beach!

hehe

Mike,

I am sure that you will appreciate that there is a 'tricky' balance between giving a festival organiser the possible numbers while at the same time trying to encourage them to get sponsorship in order to support the numbers.

We need to know the level of interest and commitment!

Best wishes

There is no official record for team synchronised flying.

But 710 kites were flown simultaneously during theDrachenfest in ST Peter-Ording,Germany on 9th August 2008.

That apart from endurance flights is the only record.

Just thought you would like to know.

Thanks Bob

As Simon said, there are all kinds of kite records that are not in the "book". The organizers of the particular event above gave everyone a number and a free kite! Take a look at some of Ray Bethell's records. www.raybethell.com (amazing) The largest number of kites flown on a single line is 11,284, this record is held by a class of Japanese school children. The most kites flown in the sky at one time is 4,663 at Long Beach, Washington.

Records are great - but who knows what kind of "records" have actually been done? People were flying kites 1,000 years before paper was invented. I guess we are just now starting to count - lol. (falling off soapbox now - back under rock !!!)
