Kite Staking

I recently tried kite staking with 100" lines and a standard stake (golf ball top)

well it worked OK for a bit I think I'm missing something though, do you use a screw in style stake ? and I'm sure you use longer lines what would you suggest ?

Thanks in Advance, Jim

I was never good at it. I kept clobbering myself with the REV. I was using a dog stake which screws in to the ground. Lines I think were 100ft.

John Barresi is the absolute pro on this.

Jim, here's a past posting on the subject...

http://kitelife.com/forum/index.php?showto...amp;hl=dogstake

I do use a dog stake (or screw), but it has diamond-polished ceramic rings attached to it through which the lines run.

The link above should provide a little more info on this. ;)

As for line length, just remember... Whatever you fly with is "cut" in half, since it doubles back to you through the stake.

I generally prefer 120' lines, which end up giving me roughly 60' of fly line from stake to kite.

I was watching one of John B. videos and was wondering how you were flying and holding the kite. At first i thought some one else was flying. Very clever ideas..

When the kite top is towards you are the controls reversed. right is left and left is right. ?

  • 4 weeks later...

Notice that the fishing rod tips are welded to the "V" shaped rod. The ring and wrapped connector on the screw-in dog stake look to be is welded closed. Also, the connector used to connect the "V" shaped rod to the dog stake ring is a small version of what is used for safety chains on a trailer. It screws closed.

All in all, a very strong and simple set-up.

Where can I get these materials? I would love to give it a try some time.

I just make one. Just like Johns.

Dog stake at the pet store.

U bolt at the hardware store.

Rod tips at the bait shop.

I haven't used it yet but it looks great. The rod tips fit very snug over the U bolt ends and after forceing them on they spread a bit and screwed on the rest of the way leaving no need to glue or weld.

Just a recommendation, you'll probably want to weld or glue them... There is quite a bit of torque on the stake, more than you'd see flying normally. ;)

Any chance of a photo?

Thanks John.

I am sure you are totaly correct. It just looked so good this way, I figured I would use it like this till it broke then glue it. No big deal when you’re not in competitions and I am just doing it for FUN. You of course need it rock solid every time. I will try to get a picture tomorrow and post it.

I'm eager to see the pic, so I can go build one. Ever since I saw John B's Little Red Riding Hood, I wanted to try it.

Look at the 8th post on this string Watty. I went to take a pic of mine today and my digital camera says no battery with a new battery in it.

Zee, Not much at all, The dogsteak was around $10 and that is the major part. I don't even remember what the rest cost which means not much.

See I did make one. A friend had his camera at work last night so we took these. Wow was he confused when he saw this thing. If you look close you can see that by screwing the tips on it actually stretched the metal a bit which I hope holds it together a bit longer. I plan to take it to St Augustine this weekend to let some pros try it out show me the fine points.. (Hear that Jay and Chef)

I was just wondering if dog staking caused extra wear on the kite strings. I've had the same set of quad lines for about 4 years now and I was unsure if the increased friction between the strings and surface cause the strings to wear faster.

I would appreciate any advice possible from John or anyone experienced at dog staking.

Thanks,

McKenzie
