Theresa
Worldmark Resort, where I and many others are staying, has excellent WiFi, and it is the closest building to where the Rev field is set up. Cell phone signal is also excellent on the beach, and is also 3G for internet phones. Walt!! We have WiFi in the lobby, but it's a paid thingy with a username and password. I pay for access to it, so you can use it in your unit, with a router(s) that I will be checking out at the front desk. Just wanted to clarify, so nobody got the wrong idea.... There is no Starbucks in LB. But...there is Long Beach Coffee, just a block off Sid Snyder, that has internet access. JB may know what kind, as he has been in there. Theresa
Let's just go over this one more time for those of us who have never been to this. We do not need to be an AKA member to fly, but if we want to be insured we want to sign this sheet and get a bracelet or we have to be an AKA member to get the insurance aspect? Sorry if this is a dense question. I would think being insured would be a good thing. Bart Bart, no this is a good question! Not dense at all! Basically, by signing the waiver, you get the wrist band, can fly in organized events, in the sanctioned field areas, and as a non-AKA member you agree to waive liabilty. Hope that helps! See you on the beach! Theresa

AldenMiller
So, no insurance unless you are a AKA member? Bart Cheap to sign up and they have a membership drive going on. I've been to a couple with AKA membership and a couple without. The cool thing is that if you are an AKA member you get the magazine and will probably see pictures of the event. If you are lucky you'll make the cover and then you can make a rock and roll song "on the cover of kiting magazine".. You can fly either way but signing the festival sheet protects them. -Alden

See you all on the beach.
bartman
Well, an AKA membership for me would never pay for itself since I do not buy that much stuff, but I would prefer having insurance at this event so may need to look at doing this while I am there. Is there different levels of membership? I have no use for the magazine and hate paying for paper. Is there a version that doesn't come with the mag? Bart The most basic AKA membership is $40 for 1 year, $78 for 2 years, and $116 for 3 years. It comes with full AKA membership and Kiting Magazine shipped via 3rd class mail. The other types of membership really just push the shipping priority up on the magazine. I don't think there is an option to get the membership without the magazine. I know they are posting PDF versions of the magazine online. I think it's a valid question for the AKA folks because I do know it costs a pretty penny for the magazine. Maybe they still have those "flight insurance" pedestals at the airport, that ought to be enough... -Alden

Maybe there are reciprocal arrangements in which case some of us will be covered. Please could someone tell me what the damage would be for international applicants to the AKA, slow mail version <grins> Thanks Felix
KiteLife
For international applications, join the AKA to support, get travel insurance to cover your body.

KiteLife
Just saying, AKA membership is not requisite to be in the mega fly... Join if you believe in the ideals (regardless of politics), I know I do, been a member since 1990. Mostly, for international participants, I wouldn't look to the AKA to solve insurance concerns. Non-AKA members will sign a waiver, making them exempt from AKA coverage as I understand it.

Presumably non AKA members sign a waiver confirming that they are NOT covered by AKA insurance and subject to any kiting related liabilities personally! I would only expect AKA to cover kiting liabilities. Can anyone enlighten us further? Thanks Felix
bartman
Yes, this is getting confusing. I have travel insurance for out of Canada. This is for medical should the need arise. I do not have "kite liability" insurance if my kite bumps someone on the beach and they decide to sue my ass. It seems pointless to sign a waiver with AKA to say I am not covered. Of course I am not covered. Waivers of this nature are about as legally binding as chewing gum is strong enough hold your house together - don't rely on it standing up. So how do we get "kite liability"? Buy an AKA membership? Generally I wouldn't concern myself about it in Canada. It is a concern in the U.S.A.. I'd like to get something set up, ideally, before hand, but if not then when I get there. Bart
KiteLife
I've got a simple answer, albeit somewhat limiting... Fly inside the Rev field, and assist (politely) with keeping the general public out of it unless escorted. Ain't met a Rev flier yet who'd sue you for clobbering them by mistake. Yep, I agree wholeheartedly!! Might get a tangle or something, but never heard a Rev flyer talk about suing someone!! Probably help you instead of suing you!! bartman
It's not really the Rev fliers that concern me as much as everyone else who may happen along at the wrong time. Bart

Bart Hi Bart, If you want, I can sign you up for AKA on the spot. Or Ben can. Or Amy (mousie) can. That way you can decide when you get there if you want to join AKA The more the merrier!!
