This isn't my photo, nor is it my Rev, and I sure hope that the Shook's won't mind me posting it, but I thought it was such a great shot. I am actually using this, as my current desktop background photo, on my laptop. The building in the background, is the famous "Whalehead Club", which dates back to the early 1920's. http://www.whaleheadclub.com/ The structure has been recently renovated and restored, and is now open to the public. It is located on North Carolina's Outer Banks, on a thin strip of land, which lies between the Currituck Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. This is at the far north end of highway 12, where the blacktop ends and the sand begins, in the small village of Corolla, NC. In addition, the famous "Currituck Light" stands within very close proximity to the Whalehead Club, making this quite a picturesque location. Corolla also happens to be the home, of Cath & Eliot Shook. Eliot, of course, is one of the talented artist, that makes some of Revolution's Masterpiece kites, which are quite beautiful, as well as unusual. http://www.revkites.com/main/Eliot_Shook The Shook's kite store, "Flying Smiles Kites", is located right across highway 12 from this beautiful spot. What a great place to live and work, and also to visit.............

I would be remiss not to point out that TOBX (Thanksgiving on the Outer Banks) is held on the above mentioned beautiful grounds of the Whalehead Club.

Here is a picture from this years festival of my daughter Laurel playing under Lee Sedgwick's stack of signature series Rev 1s......or maybe it's Lee playing with his kites over my daughter.

I saw the desktop pictures thread, and decided that some pictures I had laying about deserved to be here moreso... since they weren't on my desktop!

Not so much famous by our regards... except maybe the lack of landmarks

I like to call this the bear-bait park... only place we've ever seen one. Really beautiful place to fly in the summer, and as close as we get to a "beach" [its about a 75' drop off the edge there to water].

Same park, but looking back at hillside - the populated section of it. This park is about a quarter square mile total cleared that you get about 270 degrees of view and ocean breeze.

This was a roadtrip to Portage Glacier this past October. In the background is actually a section of a glacier. And they really are eerily blue underneath the snow. When its not tourist season [May-Sept], most things shut down for the winter. We were going to go to Exit Glacier in Seward on the last trip [below], but when the road sign says bring cold weather survival gear and equipment to be deserted for a week, we decided that wouldn't be so much of a good idea.

This one was from our most recent roadtrip to Seward a few weeks ago. A quaint little town that has more bars than general stores and I can count all the taxis on one hand. They don't have any beaches there either, the edge of the parking lot there is about 10' from waters edge. Its about 30 miles out to unprotected ocean, so the tide changes maybe 2-3'. Found a sea otter, a seal and a bald eagle all in one day within a couple miles from where that picture was taken.

More to come in a while when I get the older pics sorted and uploaded to picasa.

As promised... the easily accessible ones

I think I mentioned this park on one of our early flying attempts, Sept 08, literally within days of when we got our kites. We found out later that the storm you can see in the background was actually hailing about 5 miles from where we were. It never got to us though.

This was out at the State Fair in Palmer this past August. Jerry is in the background flying his Rev dual-line delta. The fair turns out to be one of the larger concentrations of people in AK at a given time.

These were out in Sutton, about an hour and a half north of here. Its a reclaimed mine, and has a clearing thats about a square mile and a 360 degree view. Unfortunately its almost a snowmachine/atv only trail for a mile to the actual clearing [yep, we got stuck on the way out even in 4wd].

Sunset with snow clouds. The light reflections on the panels make you want to stare at the sun for a few hours. Ice fog makes a similar light pattern where it appears the street lights are pointed straight up.

My REV II doesn't see as much flying time as her big brothers, so tried to get out in front of some famous landmarks on our return trip from Kite Party 8. Yep, we just got back last night ... stretched it out as much as possible. Tried to fly in front of Window Rock at the Veteran's Park, but the winds seemed like they came from all directions at the same time. The city of Window Rock is the capital of the Navajo Indian Nation and takes it's name from the natural formation in the background.

The Grand Canyon is one of the great attractions in Arizona. Unfortunately, it tends to overshadow one of Arizona's other great wonders ... Canyon de Chelly. It has access very similar to what you'll find on the north rim of the Grand Canyon ... namely no barriers between you and nature. You can walk right up and stand on the top of a 700 foot vertical wall. Scary ... very scary! The neat thing is that that also assures you won't be crashing into the ground ... unless you use 701 foot lines.

There are some fantastic pictures of Canyon de Chelly on the web and in "Arizona Highways" ... here's one my wife took looking down from where I was flying.

Tom, great shots.

I'm going to have to stop by that canyon the next time I drive out to California. But you've already got the photo of kite there so maybe if I fly a stack? With a little pull that could get pretty exciting...

With your progressive stack, that should be no problem! I'm sure you've stopped at the Torrey Pines Gliderport in/near San Diego. People step off the edge of that cliff with kites all the time.

Just be sure to get a complete set of pictures during your descent ... probably without the sound would be best!

Speaking of Torrey Pines ... maybe a picture there would be in order ... especially with Ben's new camera lens. That special beach IS still open isn't it?

Cheers,

Tom
