KiteLife
True. I'm just curious if it would be easy enough to do to be worth the effort. I imagine it would be, let's cross our fingers.
KiteLife
Aha, just got the scoop... And a reality check. The placement of the Shoutbox is part of the template, globally. Can't change the template per user... Every time I've moved it up or down, I've had to rebuild the templates to complete the job. So, no. Morrunya
Another thought came to mind, and I wonder if it is 'reasonably possible' to setup the shout box so that the newest posts appear at the bottom? The reason I ask this, is that in order for me to scroll down, after reading the shout box, I have to move my mouse over to the side of the shout box before I use the mouse wheel to scroll down, other wise, it ends up scrolling down through the shout box instead of the forum Index. If the order of posts was switched, then the shout box would already be scrolled all the way down, and this would no longer be an issue.
KiteLife
Take a look now. Great suggestion Watty, stock setting tweak, basically made it behave more like any other IRC or IM system.

Awesome! Thank you very much John I didn't even notice until I read this because I didn't have any hassle scrolling down. XD
bartman
This change just made this feature less annoying and more useful to me! Thanks. Bart
Jeff
I voted bottom, but then turned it off altogether. I think a live chat interferes with the way I use a forum anyway. A chat window needs to stay open and static, and when you turn the Global Display of the shoutbox on, it adds one more layer of stuff I have to scroll past to get to what I want. The feature is fine, though. I'd rather have it the way I've got it, which is that there is a simple link in the menu bar across the top. If I want to use the shoutbox, I can click that link and open it on its own page or tab.
Scott_of_melnsct
Since the shoutbox can be minimized any time we want to, why not leave it active all the time it's in view? I would like to ba able to scroll up and see if anybody shouted while reading a thread without having to click the "I'm Back" button. There might be more chatting that way. Perhaps there's some real good reason for this that I'm not aware of. I don't pretend to know squat about programming. Just my observation,
Jeepster
Funny how the more things change the more they stay the same. Anybody else remember party lines? That's what the shoutbox seems to revive. Let's see ... forums, facebook, shoutbox, e-mail, snail mail, cell phone ... all these different ways of communicating ... when does anyone have time to fly kites anymore??? I've turned the distraction off ... going back into hibernation. Gumbling, Tom
KiteLife
As time goes on, I'm considering more and more the idea of removing the Shoutbox from global view and just having folks use the dedicated Shoutbox page as a chatroom with the timeout set to something more like 5 minutes. The thing is, I think it's chewing up tons of bandwidth on the server as well, having to load on every single page. I know the sentiments of those who wish it gone, but would the folks who ARE using it regularly forgive me if we use only the dedicated page? monkey
LOL anyone who knows my set up would laugh at that Manny! Me have monitors ( bangs chest) It's never the size of your monitors, but, what you DO with them. Ok, yer fine then!
KiteLife
You'll notice the Shoutbox is gone from the global pages and limited only to the dedicated page (link on navbar)... This is due to a marked increase in bandwidth usage due to the multiple refresh occurring every time someone was on any given page of the forum, to the point where it was surpassing the limits for this hosting account. With the sheer number of daily visits, there was just no way to sustain it on the server end, but I encourage everyone who has an interest to hang out and chatter on the dedicated page, shoudn't be an issue. Thanks for your understanding.
Baloo
Got into this conversation late, did just vote for bottom. Dope!! Now I have read the rest of the thread it looks like a good idea being able to call the chatbox up when you want it. You get 2 bites at the Cherry. Dedicated chat if that is what you want. Instantly to Forum when you like. Looks like a good decision to me John, and a save on bandwidth. A win win situation I would think.
Baloo
So, trying to keep up to date with this one now! Will it still use up loads of bandwidth if it is tied to the main forum page only? I prsume the little "Loading" tag that pops up at the top of the window is to do with the Shoutbox refreshing? Oh, btw, just changed my vote from bottom to top if the shoutbox comes back onto thr main page. The change that Watty asked for made it more sensible for me. And the ease with which it can be turned off if you want to. Edited January 1, 2010 by Baloo
Reef Runner
What happened to Shoutbox from the main page ????? Oh, now I see. I don't like it, but if that's the way it's got to be, I'm sure JB is the one that knows......................pooh Now you need to do the same, over on the Kitelife forum. Honestly, I don't care what you do, or how you design the site, just keep them the same. People will adapt, no matter what you do. They might not be happy at first, but they'll come around. After all, lots of people didn't want you to change the REV forum, but it seems to be working out just fine. Don't worry about it JOB, just do what needs to be done, and be done with it, but it sure would help us old guys, if we didn't have to learn to operate, on two different forums..........gotta go, it's New Year's Eve....................Happy New Year !! Scott_of_melnsct
In light of the bandwidth issue I say that's a good decision. The forum is the main event and should stay that way. That being said it will not likely be used at all now unless folks plan ahead to chat there at a given time. Out of sight makes spontaneous conversation very unlikely. Would it be too much to have the shoutbox appear at the bottom or top of the view new content page? That way when you check new content you would see if somebody has posted anything in the shoutbox. If not, it may still be a useful tool and should remain available in it's current dedicated page.
JoneZ
Maybe we could find someone to code a Kitelife/Revkites standalone chat application.
KiteLife
They already exist, and it's been tried... Some of you may remember kitechat.org under the Kitelife flag. Problem was, it got very little activity after the first couple of weeks and the bandwidth usage wasn't worthwhile.
JoneZ
Nature's first green is gold; Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf's a flower; But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay. Robert Frost. Forums are my forte anyhow.
