  1. 1. Do you want to see the shoutbox at the top or bottom of forum pages?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, just added "shoutbox" as a present to the Rev forum... It's kind of like chat, messages that refresh every X number of seconds.

First, if you don't care for the shoutbox at all, you can make it invisible by clicking the "My Prefs" button in the right of the shoutbox, then set "Display Global Shoutbox" to NO... Doing so removes it from the "every page" display, but you can still access it anytime using the Shoutbox link in the main navigation menu.

Or if you just want to show/hide it, click the little "-" or "+" in the upper right corner of the Shoutbox section. :)

You can also click the "archive" link to view past shouts from our members.

Enjoy, please do let me know if causes any problems... And remember, you can always disable it. ;)

FYI, globally, I can move it to the bottom of the page (instead of the top), or the sidebar...

Majority vote will decide, speak your mind! ;)

Also, I can set it to only appear on the index, or all pages (as it is now).

At the moment, it refreshes with new shouts every 20 seconds.

Just seen post, For me I would prefer it only to come up when asked and be at the bottom. Takes up to much screen real estate at top.

I like it at the top too, simple because if I want to follow the shoutbox, I'd have to scroll down *every damned time* I change a page...

This way, it's always at the top as I cruise around the forum.

Also, first time visitors may never notice it if it's at the bottom.

John,

Nice changes to the forum. Thanks to you and admins for the long nights to pull it off.

Quick question: The shoutbox minimization only appears to work when I am logged in. When I am not logged in, clicking on minus sign doesn'tdo anything. Has anyone else reported same?

Buy yourself a larger screen. Worked for me:kid_devlish:

LOL anyone who knows my set up would laugh at that Manny! ;) Me have monitors ( bangs chest)

Yep John! the reduction button works just fine.

If it means hitting that each time I'm on the forum....I think I can manage that.

So for me a change of heart on top or bottom of the screen.

Leave it where it.

Votes have shifted, 12 to 9 for shoutbox the bottom...

As promised, I'm going to move it down for a few hours, be sure to comment back here with your thoughts.

Better, worse?

Mousie, I have a 28" main monitor with an 18.5" oveflow monitor next to it... Mouse and content travels between, continuous. ;)

FYI, it would seem that nearly everyone who voted to put the shoutbox at bottom isn't using it to any great extent.

To this, I would suggest you disable the shoutbox altogether via "My Prefs" in the shoutbox section.

Those who want it at the top are using it quite a bit, and not just for idle chatter.

I don't think it's gonna stay at the bottom for very long... But, not sure yet.

As always, feedback is weighed fairly, regardless of the final outcome.

OUCH, I got a -1? :kid_brooding:

Come on, I'm just trying some good stuff here... Trying to make it better.

If you've got an issue, tell me about it, I DO LISTEN (you know that).

[tantrum]An anonymous -1 is kind weak... Mark me down if you will, but find your berries and speak your mind[/tantrum]

I don't like it at the top, but just turned it off now. I might have used it on occassion at the bottom, but at the top it was in the way.

I do find it rather interesting that you can see who votes and what they voted. Seems rather wrong for lack of a better word. Kind of un-democratic to take a vote then decide that only those who are using it should have their votes counted.

I didn't give you the -1, but I can see why someone would not agree for the my same reasons and do it. I would admit to it though if it was me.

Noted Bart, however, it did provide insight into the user habits... It was useful to know, the folks who who didn't really use it voted for bottom.

In this case, it makes sense for them to simply do 2 clicks and disable it from the global view.

Without the user info, we wouldn't have been able to get the same reading.

Also, it does let them know it's a public poll, and the option is clear to "delete my vote" after the fact. ;)

When it comes time for other votes, I won't generally make them public.

Where does it say it is a public vote and your voting can be monitored? edit, oh on the screen where you actually cast your vote, but who are the others then since I can't see anyone's vote.

I voted for the bottom and have nothing to hide regarding that, but I do not see anywhere that it indicates my vote can be viewed. It should be between me and the system, that's it.

Knowing this may prevent me from voting on anything in the future where I might actually not want anyone to know.

My biggers concerns are with the remembering and moving me to the bottom of the topics as well as the inconistant top post list on the main page which today is showing just one. The other day it showed none so we're moving up if nothing else.

Indeed, as Bart pointed out, it does say that the votes may be viewed by others when it's a public poll.

The votes are viewable by click the little "view" link to the right of each poll option.

And again, you can delete your vote after the fact to either remove it altogether or to change it.

This "public poll" isn't the standard, but in this case, it gave me a clear idea of why/how the answers fit into the big picture.

Personally, with the standards I try to keep in my own life, I proudly stand by (or own up to) the opinions I share.

Sorry for my "berries" tantrum, I'm over it... It is my cross to bear after all, being the one in the saddle here.
