  1. When I make up new line sets for us, I stretch each line as I make them up. While the sets are new, we switch the upper with the lower every few flights as the upper seem to get a little more stretch. After a number of flights I check for length and equalize as necessary. On down the line I check for length once in a while.

  2. Lynn and I usually fly on 100s. When flying with others we use 100s up to about six fliers. Those with whom we fly do the same. We use 100s when flying demos on all but the largest of fields. Seal Beach Festival, Morro Bay Festival both call for 100s as 120s are too long, especially if the wind is a little low and you have to back up some.

There are several pairs and teams with whom we fly on occasion who carry and use 100 foot line sets.

Of course, 120s always with larger groups when space is no problem.

    That's what we do.

That being said, there is a video on YouTube of 18 of us at Kite Party 8, all together on 75s. A bit of a traffic jam at times, but it was really fun.

I would only suggest this activity with experienced fliers. One misstep can turn a mega fly into a mega tangle.

  3. Hi Jim,

I do sew a little, and thought about your suggestion.

What I wondered about, was how exactly the screen would get sewn on. It seemed like the screen/ripstop seam should get folded some how, as opposed to just a lap type seam.

I've done some "cut-a-way" applique with ripstop which sounds like what you are suggesting.

Did you just use a simple lap seam, or did you fold the edges of the screen over before sewing, or...or...

    Thanks!

    Bill

No need to fold at the seam. Rev doesn't do that. Hold the screen to the back of the sail with 1/4" double stick seam tape all around the screen, all four sides. Sew through that tape. We use the three-stitch zig zag the same as Rev uses. Cut the sail away from the front being very careful not to cut any of the screen.

    You're done.

You can check this by looking at any vented 1.5 Rev.

  4. If you have access to a sewing machine and some plastic screen from Home Depot, you can vent your EXP the same way Revolution vents the factory vented revs. Sew the screen to the back of the sail and cut the ripstop from the front.

We have done it on several kites and it works out just fine.

  5. I found flights from LAX to Amsterdam round trip for $668.00, leaving in the middle of the week and staying over into the third week. In the past, we have always found a better price flying across the pond during the middle of the week. That was some years ago, don't know if it is still the case.

The price I found was for next March as they would not quote past 330 days. I will be interested to see what time brings.

Another consideration is room cost. We would prefer to stay within walking distance of the venue. Nothing upscale, just safe and clean. No interest in renting a car or spending lots of time getting to the beach.

As far as a group rate from NY or NJ, sounds interesting. However, would only be interested in going over that way as we would most likely do some travel on the Continent and visit friends in the UK. Would stay for several weeks.

Our interest is up. Let's see how it goes.

  6. Would love to meet up with you, but, alas, we are on the wrong side of the pond.

You are headed for one of our favorite areas. We have had some wonderful times in North Wales. Ruthin and Betws-y-coed are a couple of our favorites as well as Conway and Caernarfon. You will only be 16 miles from the "Falcon" pub in Chester where you can get a pint of Samuel Smith's Museum Ale.

Oh, you might want to visit Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.

  7. East Coast of the US would be fun for us, as we haven't been there since we started flying.

Scheveningen also sounds like fun, we haven't been there since the late 80s.

Kite party would be good as well, and is a great place to be in March.

Any place in the UK that would work? I know a great PUB in Chester that has Samuel Smith's Museum Ale.

No mater where, an important thing for us, and perhaps others, is reasonable accommodations near the venue and public transportation as a rental car may be out of the question for us. (We're old guys, you know?)

If on the East Coast of the US, we would most likely hook up the Airstream and make a nice tour of it, especially if it is during fall color time.

Perhaps a listing of several places, and have fliers list their names under each they would consider.

  8. As much as we would like to make a trip across the pond, if Scheveningen is loaded with people, it might not be the best choice.

I hadn't considered Kite Party, but it would be a great place. If there is a problem with 120' lines, which, like Mike, I doubt very much, there is lots of beach just a few hundred yards to the north, or south of the "kite party field".

Both LAX and John Wayne airports are not far, and there are loads of rooms in the area.

I think the down side would be getting 100 fliers to go to Huntington Beach just as it was getting 100 fliers to Long Beach. Don't know.

Hunting Beach California is a great place to be in March.

  9. We have been at Long Beach with no wind, and been blown off the beach. However, on the whole, LB can pretty well be depended on for good flying wind. Scheveningen sounds like a good place, especially if the rooms are near the beach and not too expensive. Worth further exploration.

  10. Scheveningen might work. Visited there in the late 80s. Only a short trip from one of our favorites cities, Brugge. Close to the UK where we could visit long time friends in Chester.

I can find many hotels near the beach but no prices. I'll continue to search.

Perhaps in the spring or fall while school is in session?

    When is the wind best?

  11. From Facebook:-

I'm thinking that it will not be possible to do 100 fliers at Berck 2012 but that a different strategy should be put in place.

Maybe a group/event should be formed asking those fliers who 'will' find the resources to attend to sign up!

Where in the world is the cheapest destination with good flying conditions?

    Felix

It isn't only the financial resources, but a place that will have rooms easy to obtain without some other large group competing for them.

How about Bristol just before the Festival? Maybe a week or two? When would that be?

  12. Ah, very nice! Thanks for the reply Jim Foster wink.gif

I was at the festival too last year. Unfortunately, I wasn't flying Revs then. We were there for the "Mass Ascending" first thing in the morning, then left to ride the tram (fastest tram in the world!) and hike the mountains.

This year we are skipping the getting-up-early part and checking out some of the daytime festival activities. We might go see the "Glowdeo" event in the evening. I'll be trying to "Rev" up the festival a little this time!

You may want to re-think your plans. Everything pretty much shuts down during the day, and if the wind is blowing, there is no "Glowdeo".
