  1. I disagree with this completely, both by logic and flight... If you move the line attachments from bridle (in front of the kite) to the ends of the vertical spars (i.e. "indoor"), they are further apart and movements need to be adjusted appropriately... When I took the bridle off my regular B for street flying, I found bicycle rotations, clockwork, etc took a larger change in handle angle to make effective.

    Agreed.

My geometry teacher (that was a long, long, time ago) would say that the closer the lines are attached to the ends of the vertical spars, the more input you will need at the handles, hence the long indoor handles to help make up for the added distance between the upper and lower lines with the absence of the bridle.

Think about this. If you were to attach the lines directly to the vertical spars six inches up and six inches down from the center of that spar, you would be able to tilt the kite completely flat forward and backward with 13" handles.

The lines, kite and handles form a trapezoid (trapezium for those of you across the pond), the lines being the two equal sides, the handles being the short side, and the kite being the long side. Increasing the length of the long side (removing the bridle), diminishes the effect that moving the short side has on the long side, and the reverse.

  2. The regular Revs have a bridle to move the control points closer to the center, increasing sensitivity.

The bridle also provides some support to the center of the leading edge to keep it from folding in the center, which should not be needed indoors.

  3. Jim Foster invited everyone he met to come see the kite flying this weekend. He promised everyone that JB would be here this week end to teach them to fly.

I did invite everyone I met to come see the kite flying this weekend.

It was Jeepster who promised everyone that JB would be here this week end to teach them to fly. Right Jeepster? :P

  4. We are headed to Huntington now. With one quick stop we should be on the beach within the hour.

Really looking forward to seeing everyone, and will surely miss those who, for what ever reason, can not make KP this year.

    Cheers, Lynn and Jim

  5. The weather report looks good through Monday the 14th. It calls for a possible shower on Saturday morning, but I wouldn't count on that as so many times those go around Huntington Beach.

Seems as though several are coming early. We're ready for a fun week.

  6. John and TK got here last night.

Today, Saturday was the first day of the kite festival. Sunny and warm all day with very nice wind. We flew three “demos” for the crowd (about 3,000), and there were other fliers, local and long distance, who flew as well. Later in the afternoon we had a Rev mega fly. We had 14 fliers and it was fun, fun, fun.

All day the sky was filled with large colorful kites on the big kite field. Very beautiful.

Tonight is the fliers banquet. Should be a fun time.

Tomorrow is supposed to be about like today. Oh dear, what shall we do?

    Life is good, Jim

  7. Lynn and I got to the KOA on South Padre Island on Thursday about 11:30 am. On the way down HWY 77, there were numerous single car accidents caused by folks driving too fast on the bridge overpasses. Some of the highway was closed, and traffic was routed along the frontage road (old Hwy 77).

When we hooked up, the water spigot was frozen, but I was able to get it loose with some hot water from the trailer. We let it drip all night and had no further problem with water, However, at about 8 pm the electricity went out and is still out as of 2.07 pm. Fortunately, we have been dry camping in Quartzsite, Arizona for ten days, so have our Honda 2000 with us to keep batteries charged in the trailer and run necessary stuff like the Espresso coffee maker. The electric company web site indicates that it will not be on in this zip code until 1:00 pm tomorrow, Saturday. This includes the area where the indoor is to take place this evening. We'll see.

We have not left the RV park yet today, so electrical problems may be more local, like just within the park, don't know, but will check it our later.

The clouds just parted and the sun is out!!

Wind and temps are supposed to be good for Saturday and Sunday, so we are planning to fly.

Saw Steve D, Monkey and Bazzer yesterday at the kite shop. Willow is with them, but John B was still in Las Vegas, and TK in Portland as of 3 pm yesterday, Thursday, so don't know if they will be able to get here.

  8. Jim and Lyn- you will have to list your travel destinations on a separate file, I'm sure :blue-grin:

    Lolly

The list is not so big. Although I have visited every state except Hawaii, most of that travel was before we started flying. We have flown in nine western states, and will increase to ten in a couple of weeks when we go to SPI.

However, we are planning a trip through the mid-west this summer, so the list should grow considerably.

  9. Hi Jim,

The Super Sixteen is, in my view, a focus for the practicalities of large scale grid flying and the more regular fly ins. It may be that 25 - 30 fliers can turn up at an event which can result in a dramatic presentation for a short time but that there may be not much 'depth' in the type of moves that they can do or the links between them. Building a repertoire of moves/transitions with which all the fliers are familiar is going to be the way to develop this project.

I think that you have to challenge So-Cal to get its act together in this instance.

    Felix

We'll see who shows up for the New Years fly in San Diego.

I think Kite Party 9 will most likely be the next opportunity to get that many Rev fliers together in So-Cal. There just doesn't seem to be a large enough number of Rev fliers here to get together for a 16 grid. The most I have have seen at any one time, except for KP, has been eight. Eight is great, but only half a grid.

Perhaps a little more push on the part of us So-Cal fliers will help. We'll see. Desire may be another issue. Grid seems to be a bigger thing on your side of the pond. One little problem is that we usually leave So-Cal in May and don't return until October.

We are looking hard at a trip across the pond in 2012. Berck, perhaps Cervia, UK for sure. Depends on dates for Berck. Hope it's not during Easter week again.

Anyway, sure enjoy the grid posts.

  10. Talked to John Mitchell in San Diego last Saturday, and he asked if I was following this thread. I told him that I had looked at some of it, but not the whole thing. Well, I have spent a good portion of today doing just that.

There is way too much fun posted here. Lynn and I were in our first grid at Kite Party 8, a grid of 16. We were in several 16s as well as the 56 and 64 at WSIKF.

The problem we have here is getting 16 fliers together. A few weeks ago we were in San Diego for a few days and had John Mason, Tom King, Carol and Cass Pittman (from Seattle, WA), Lynn and myself. We only needed 10 more Rev fliers. I'm not sure there are 10 more in Southern California who could/would fly in a grid, and if there are, getting them all in the same place at the same time, well, good luck.

Perhaps New Years Day at Mariner Point in San Diego?

    Who's up for it?
