  1. If you get lots of 10-15 mph winds, I would suggest that you get a full vent "B". Adding a two wrap frame in with your three wrap leading edge will help your full sail keep it's shape, but the vented kite will be much easier to control in higher wind. Also, vented Revs are as smooth as butter in any wind strong enough to support them.

  2. Lynn and I each carry five vented Revs, one mid vent, three different full vented and one mesh. The mesh is the most fun to fly. In a moderate to heavy wind it can fly nearly as fast backward as forward. Reverse and sideways flight is much easier with a vented Rev. You might want to start with a full vent. You can change the frame for varying wind conditions. We usually use three wrap, sometimes use two wrap. I heavy wind we use a three wrap frame with an additional two wrap leading edge spar set in with the three wrap leading edge set.

  3. It was mentioned in the similar thread on GWTW, another option is to actually download the videos from YouTube.

There are a couple of available addons for Firefox which do this, or you can also use this URL...

With the Firefox addon I use and KeepVid both, you can download ANY resolution that's available on YouTube. ;)

Yesterday Mike Kory suggested using HTML5 rather than Flash. It seems a little better.

I have been using Download Helper with Firefox. I will try your suggestions.

  4. For several months YouTube videos have been very slow. Other video sites download just fine. I can watch streaming video on Hulu in the highest definition. I have the latest flash player and the latest version of Firefox. The YouTube videos don't want to start, and when they do, they will download a short time and stop. Hitting "refresh" will sometimes get them started again, but they seldom download to completion.

I went to the YouTube forum, and others seem to have the same problem.

The video that Monks just posted on vimeo.com downloaded without a hitch.

    How about you?

  5. Lynn and I are spending Christmas at Pismo Beach in our Airstream. All of our children (youngest 46) have chosen to go separate ways this year to visit their extended families. We got here on December 11th, and have done lots of flying on the beach, sleeping late, eating lots of fish and chips, doing whatever we wish, whenever we wish. It's been just wonderful, or as Jynx would say, "Winderful".

We wish all of our "Rev Family" a very Merry Christmas and a great year to come. I know we will see many of you at Kite Party and WSIKF, as well as other events throughout the new year.

Oh! a special thanks to Laura for starting this thread.

Next stop, January 1st, Mariner Point/Mission Bay San Diego.

See you on the beach, or at the park, or in the desert at Quartzsite.

    Cheers, Lynn and Jim

  6. Some years ago (read that as many years ago) I got a pair of "driving gloves". Very soft leather, a little fuzzy on the inside. They are not too bulky, so they live in the pockets of my favorite jacket. They have served me well at WSIKF, Pismo Beach, and any other place where I may want gloves while flying. I can not attach or take apart lines whole wearing them, but otherwise they are great.

  7. Just for info:

You can find these on EvilBay for less... (PS: The date stamp is revisable).

I have a set of these and they also work well for covert SPY assignments! big_starwars.gifcrazy.gif

I got mine for $74.99 on sale last month.

On e-bay they want $29.00 for the $12 car charger. No deal

Always best to deal with a reputable dealer if you can.

  8. Many of us have been trying various methods of videoing our flying. Some have attached cameras to a cap, others to a kite.

I found these, and gave us an early Christmas present.

    I got them here.

I understand that they are available at REI, but have not checked that out.

We went to the park yesterday and gave them a try. This was our first try. I neglected to raise my head high enough when the kites were high in the sky. Easy to correct. Due to the preset camera resolution, the files are very large, but can be converted to other formats and made smaller. When that is done, the picture is not as crisp, but still very good. Here is a clip of our first try. This clip is at the higher resoulution, so I made it only 30 seconds.

  9. How many people put a knot near the end of the loop so that there is a short tab to pull, to loosen the lark's head knot for disassembly?

I have been doing that on our lines for years. It not only makes them easy to undo, it keeps the right and left pairs from coming undone during the winding and unwinding process.

  10. So if I'm not going to the non event (and I'm thinking I'm about 80% unlikely to go), do people not arrive early? Since they are not there, do they not leave before there are extra days after? I'm wondering if someone is not going, which days to avoid before and after . . . . or whether that's just not done. Rich, what is this thing "calendar" you speak of?

We don't start flying on the beach on the Tuesday or Wednesday before this non-event, and don't continue on to the Monday or Tuesday after this non-event. But, we do winter very close to Huntington Beach, where this thing never happens. Got that? :confused!:
