  1. Found some great gloves a couple of months ago: reasonably warm, very thin, windproof and water resistant. Best of all, they allow me to feel my Rev handles or dual straps much better than any of the other gloves I have tried.

I found them at REI for $30. They are made by Manzella. Here's the URL: http://www.rei.com/search?search=gloves&jxBrand=Manzella&hist=query%2Cgloves%5EjxBrand%2CManzella

Or just go to REI and search for Manzella gloves.

  2. This was my second Rev clinic, and I may have used up all my superlatives last year. The weather was a little more finicky this year, but the outstanding group of flyers and instructors more than made up for the challenge of the weather. My thanks to everyone who participated. As Wayne mentioned, I have some specifics to work on, thanks to Watty, Bazzer and Terry, and a few others.

I highly recommend the clinic for flyers who want to learn new skills, improve or correct existing skills and have lots of team flying opportunities. Do we really have to wait a whole year?

  3. In case no one could tell, I had a great time with the people and the kites. The wind really does blow in Hillsboro sometimes, but nobody can predict when. (For instance, this evening was rather nice.)

Sunset Beach is so close, that I would be up for this sort of event every month or two. I know that means finding time among many other commitments, and time for CJ to drive from Montana (?), but I will certainly participate.

Thanks especially to John and TK for fitting this in two days before leaving for Singapore.

  4. Update from Hillsboro:

It looks like winds will be light and variable, although I have noticed that for the last few days the weather forecast and the actual weather have varied a lot. I want to reiterate something John said in an earlier message: if you can stay past 4 pm, the best winds may well be in the time frame 4 to 8 pm.

Remember your sun screen. It's going to be bright and hot.

If you have any lights for night flying, the wind might support us. I often fly at another site, about 10 minutes or so to the west, where it will be darker. The field could support a team of 4 at once, but probably no more at one time.

I am really looking forward to this.

And, I will probably be at the fairgrounds tonight, as the wind forecast looks good for the late afternoon and evening. So maybe I will see some of you there.

  5. Sorry to be so slow in responding. I was in Seaside last week. Got a chance to fly with John Farrell, amidst time with my grandchildren. John is headed to Long Beach next.

My suggestion for a place to meet for dinner would be the Cornelius Pass Roadhouse, which is a McMenamin's establishment. You can find it on-line if you are interested. They have a reasonably priced, reasonably varied menu, in addition to a large selection of microbrews. It's maybe 3 miles from the Fairgrounds.

The weather is, as always unpredictable, but it is highly likely that the winds will be light and variable. Race frames or 2-wraps will be handy.

Also, the wind schedule during the day sometimes varies. Some days there is little wind at 10 am and then the afternoon just gets better, right into the evening. Other days the wind apparently checks out to go to dinner. But, we are all kiteflyers, so this should be no surprise. Right now the prediction for Sat and Sun is sunny, so sunscreen will be a good idea.

I am really looking forward to this event.

  6. There is a hotel right next to the field

Red Lion Hotel Hillsboro3500 Northeast Cornell Road, Hillsboro, OR 97124-6391(503) 648-3500 ‎

I've never stayed there but about 20 years ago some of my out-of-town family members did and they liked it. So I can't give you a personal recommendation, but I'd give it a try. There are also quite a few other motels/hotels in the area, within a couple of miles.

  7. Thanks for checking out the Columbia field. I have found the same result whenever asking about land owned by businesses. They usually say no categorically, based on insurance concerns. But it never hurts to check.

I am willing to go anywhere reasonable for the clinic. But since no one has found a better spot yet, I'll keep selling the Washington County Fairgrounds. I used the ruler on Google Earth to learn that the field is about the same area as the Delta West field (about 6 acres). It does have a couple of trees, but they are easy to avoid. (They have been trained not to chase kites!) Now if we could only order the wind from yesterday to show up for the clinic.

  8. The field at the Washington County Fairgrounds is available. I called them today, and they confirmed that the weekend of the 23/24 is preliminary setup for the county fair, and the flying field will not be needed for parking.

If we wanted to reserve the field, then there would be a charge and questions about insurance, etc., but so long as we just show up and use the field, we will be fine. Sometimes other people show up to walk their dogs or throw frisbees, but they have always been courteous. If we gradually just take over the field, we'll be fine.

If you are not familiar with the location, go to Google Earth and check it out. It's on the south side of Cornell and the west side of NE 34th. On Google Earth the picture shows some structures (tents and vendor stands?) but the field is actually empty.

Also note that the Max stop is just to the south of the field (about 200 yards?).

Would this work for the rest of you?

Now, how to plan the wind?

  9. I was wondering about school fields also. I sometimes fly at Forest Grove HS, where there are some enormous fields and great exposure to the N, NE and NW. I have always found space. But for a gathering of 12 people, we should probably ask ahead of time.

Often I fly at the Washington County FG, by the Hillsboro airport. The winds are pretty clear from the S, SW, SE and E, but a little dicey from the other directions. However, the 23/24 is the weekend before the county fair, and it appears there will be some setup activities going on. I'll check with the Fairgrounds office on Tuesday to see whether there will be a big crowd on the 23/24. One great aspect of the Washington County Fairgrounds is the MAX stop about 200 yards away from the field.

I've tried other schools (Glencoe, Hilhi, Liberty) but most of them have too many surrounding structures and trees, or they would be too small to accommodate this group.

  10. Hi gang!

Just got back from a trip -- unfortunately I missed LC this year but I am glad to hear that you all had a good time.

I can be there on the weekend of 23/24 July. I'll try to get a couple more also. Maybe summer will actually arrive by then.

  11. I'm a little tardy in responding but I want to add my 2 cents. This was my first rev clinic, and I really regret that I didn't attend any of the previous ones. Flying for 2 1/2 days with this group of people was a real privilege. Getting some one-on-one time with the instructors and flying in small teams were the highlights for me. And, as I have found with every group of kitefliers that I have experienced, everyone wanted to have fun, learn and be supportive of our fellow fliers. We are really lucky to have such a great group of advance rev pilots here in the NW to provide the leadership for events like this.

And if that all sounds a little formal, the biggest reward was that I had an amazing amount of fun the whole time. Thanks to everybody who participated!

    Chuck
