Wiggles B2 in a spin

Wiggle

Recommended Posts

My flying has been improving all the time..,, and Im love learning new skills....., but one thing that Im  not good at is maintaining height when spinning slowly. I can drag the kite over to the left or right while it spins slowly but cannot gain height. I can maintain height because it spins fast!!! But any attempt to gain height buy pulling with the opposite hand sends the kite into an even faster spin!

I hope this makes sense to the experienced flyers.

Hover with your leading edge vertical. Increase your altitude slightly and turn the kite 180 degrees (vertical again but pointing opposite direction).. Repeat several times and acknowledge your hand motions during this sequence..Once you can perform the sequence steadily, try without stopping for a full turn.. or even two turns..

By breaking the maneuver down into segments you maintain awareness of the kite. Putting the segments together accomplishes what you are trying to do.. once you have the movements down now all you have to work on is the transitions between the segments to get them smooth....

Tuning:  insure your sail "is square to the wind" not packing a bunch of forward drive, thereby forcing the leading edge into a leaning direction already w/o even taking off.

Now to maintain that position (particularly in low wind) you must MOVE your feet backwards, adding extra energy and making SMALLER movements with the handles. That will smooth things out.  Remember "less is more", you are gripping a baby chick, not an angry cobra.

Make a quarter rotation and stop, get comfortable and do the next quarter turn, there's no hurry. Feel the kite communicating with you, down the lines?  Make a smaller movement and STOP, feel it yet?  OKAY just inch it (rotation, leading edge going forward) STOP

Perfectly smooth is many thousand of hours away, so don't give up.  If it looks effortless than you are watching someone with a ton of practice already under their belt.

It is a matter of timing. The part of the kite that is uppermost in any position must be "leaning" towards you to maintain a hover. You probably noticed this in the basic hover positions: upright, inverted, facing left, facing right. In order to maintain altitude during a spin you must smoothly transition from each position to the next. You can practice this by moving from one position to the next VERY SLOWLY holding the kite in the same spot, and increasing the speed very slightly as you become more comfortable with the movements necessary. If you spin quickly while trying to learn this it will be more difficult because the timing must be nearly perfect to hold a stationary position.  To gain altitude you add more "up" input in each position. You can move the rotating kite in any direction by adding input in that direction, which constantly changes according to which part of the kite is facing in that direction at the moment.

Very well explained. I could not have explained it any better.
