Fly with us on New Year's Day...virtually on the internet

Happy New Year! Everybody should start the year right by flying a kite. :kid_smartass:

However, not everyone will get out today. So if not, I invite you to join us via the internet.

We'll be trying something new today. I'll be in Milwaukee with some of the other foolhardy midwestern fliers. (It's frickin' freezing). A few times during the day I'm going to send quick live video broadcasts to the 'net via UStream.TV.

Join us in this experiment. We hope to use it during the season to bring people to our events that can't physically be with us.

The hard part about getting people to watch live is just having them know when to tune in. It's not easy to communicate that from the kite field, and we don't have a schedule or anything. It's just going to be spontaneous. But there are a couple ways.

I could post a heads up here. Not the easiest thing to manage from a phone with everything going on. I could post on our Facebook page...a little easier with Facebook mobile apps. I could send a Twitter message with a link. Easiest of all, because the broadcast app will do this automatically.

So for today's first run, I'll try noting it in a few places. But the best way to stay on top of when we go live is to follow us on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/ikeclub

Now, while it's cool to see things live, it won't be necessary. The site will record our video, and it will be viewable later. So live or recorded, you can see our UStream channel at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/ikeclub

I'll try to give a few glimpses of the conditions in Milwaukee today, so you can laugh at us from the warmth of your homes. :blue-grin: Meanwhile, our club president and west coast transplant Mike will be out along the Pacific today, and may check in with a video of his own to taunt us with.

I look forward to that. :kid_brooding:

Anyway, should be fun. Check us out if you get a chance.

Happy New Year!

I know it is not actually live, pretty much as near to it as is easy I suppose. Always thought it might be fun to do this sort of thing.

Great to see Ben with his shorts on. Pretty much pitch black and freezing here at the moment.

Hope you are having Fun (please note I have spelled it with a bif F) folks.

Well, that was pretty cool. I'm finally home and thawed out. It was fun to see people actually watching us while we were out there.

I think it's a neat technology, and I plan to do some more of this from Treasure Island in a couple weeks, and any festival or gathering that I get to, really.

You can go to the IKE channel page at any time and see the videos that we broadcast....http://www.ustream.tv/channel/ikeclub

It was a little hard to read the chat on the screen since the type was so small, and white on the bright background, but I could definitely follow what you guys were typing.

Jeff,

That was so much fun to watch. I turned up the sound on the computer and went in and watched the football on TV. When you came online I could hear it and came in to watch each one. Is there a time limit on how long you can broadcast? I guess it cost you in time and data for the I-Phone use as well. Too bad the guys on the west coast didn't get on more.

Great stuff Jeff!!!!

Nice to see you've been playing around with Ustream.

Wish I'd known you guys were broadcasting today.

Rev Riders were out at Liberty today, would've checked in to say hey.

Oh well. We'll just have to fly together in 13 days!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not sure yet what the limitations are. I don't have a data limit on my account with the Droid, so there was no specific cost.

I need to research any time limitations before Treasure Island. I wouldn't mind setting up a web cam on a laptop PC, pointing it at the beach, and just letting it run all day if possible. :kid_smartass:

The iPhone has an unlimited data plan but I didn't film more because that meant I had to stop flying :)

So, I've tested out running my camcorder through a laptop and broadcasting through that, and it works great. It doesn't look like there is any limitation on live streaming, there is just a 3 hour limit on recordings.

Assuming the wifi at the hotel is decent, it doesn't look like there will be any trouble setting up the camera to look at the beach and letting it run all day. Then people can look in whenever they like.

There are at least two people I know of that are getting rooms facing the beach, so I think we can set this up pretty easily. :matrix:

Well double :censored: .

I keep tuning into IKE TV at around 2am hoping to see "big brother" style reality footage of 180GO! engaged in all sorts of drama and tomfoolery.

There's a special subscription service for the uncensored "IKE at Night."

:P
