  1. Ah, all right then it's settled, it appears I do "need" 4 wraps. Thanks for your answers! And Felix, I really do like your Xtra vent argument. It seems it would really be SAVING me money in the long run, as I wouldn't have to replace my vented so soon, yes? Makes perfect sense. blue_cool.gif

    Katrina

I have used 4 wraps a lot in my vented. They kick in very nicely about 20mph. I have flown them in gusts up to 40 feel ok with them.

  2. Numbers numbers snoobbers. Just try. I think everyone is different. You can probably fly a midvent down to 5 on 50 lb lines but it will be underpowered. Some people like that. You will have a sweet spot for each kite. I usually get my mid out about 6 or 7 cause I like the way I fly it. I will go up to about 14 or 15 then to full vent or switch to 3 wrap. I like my kites a little underpowered. But that is just me.

  3. Well todays day 3 since I went in and had my foot broken again and a foot long rod driven thru my heel into my leg bone,kid_brooding.gif so as you can imagine I'm not

problems my doctors was not sure my heart would take a major surgery and he was worried about losing me on the table so hence we did what we could,

snapped my foot off the main bones moved it over over and inch and ran a rod thru it all and put the mess in a cast for 8 weeks and I'M HEALED....kid_devlish.gif

Sounds good, yes I'm taking it easyconfused_1.gif and spending some time at home and just waiting to see how long I can take all this before I say, "see ya in the sand".

For some reason I just need to stay busy, so if you have any question this is a first," I'll be in the office pretty much for the next 8 week so give me a call".....wacko.gif

Not to worry Family I will be back and this coming year I plan to push it even harder and be on a field near you...... So till then I'm on broken foot status and you

know thats going to cost you cause we all know how I get when I'm stuck in the office, ahhhhhh Bens mind the devils play ground........Benblue_cool.gifbones.gifkid_devlish.gif

PS I'm making deals so call me soon...........

Take care Ben. Hope someone is taking care of you and that you heal fast.

Enjoyed our time discussing things in Seaside.

  4. I am basically a beginer when it comes to 0-3mph outdoor wind flying and have read alot of the forums and watched alot of the tutorials and i am trying to determine if a shorter lineset would be the best thing for me to basically get the hang of 0-3mph outdoor flying? I have read JB uses 30' lines and Watty uses 5',8', or 20' lines in light wind and make it look effortless. I have a set of 30' 50# lines that i have tried numerous times to fly my 1.5 JB with race rods in 0-3mph outdoor winds and all i get is a launch and then a mess of the lines.Seems like just way too much slack in the lines and i have tried running around to keep the slack tight and upper line tight but is seems there is just way too much line to work with. I am thinking a 15' lineset would help with less line to fall slack. Am i correct? Should i start out even shorter until i understand the concept? I have a Zen on the way in a few weeks to help with my problem but i dont think it will be the total solution and would be a shame to have a Zen and not be able to fly it correctly. Any input would be greaty appriciated!

A suggestion would be to get good size space/field. Launch the kite downwind and keep stepping backwards at about 1 to 2 mph (easy pace) and then fly the kite in the middle half of the window. If the wind is 2 then by backing straight down wind you have about 4. This will give you the feel. Then start playing moving out of the window. Then work yourself to a 360 remember always move down the line of the lines. I find low wind technique is getting to know the correct feel through the lines. As you get better you will start slowing down and not running. Watch some Scott Weider indoor video and you will see. Same principles apply.

The Zen is no magic kite. It has a little more lift but you still need to learn to keep pressure on the sail.

  5. Today I went through our Revs checking for loose ferrules.

I found four which were loose and needed to be cleaned up and glued.

Over time they do come loose, and if not repaired, you may push the ferrule all the way into the center spar when putting the leading edge together. That's a bag thing.

Finding and repairing before a problem happens, now that's a good thing.

Right on. I found one the other day on my Race Rods. There must be an oxidation of the glue. This is also a need to carry a little super glue to make field repairs.

  6. at the suggestion of the manager of my local health comlplex:

    5. Care should be taken to avoid contact between kites and: walls, railings, installed sporting equipment such as back boards, hoops, or nets, etc unless such contact is first cleared with the management.

    Scott

I think the only damage that could be done would be to the overhead electrical fixtures.

I think there could be a nice video put together on this. It would be be straightforward and would show kites as a legitimate use of a rec facillity. Kiting is a sport the same way cheerleading now is and definately in a similar category as floor exercises in gymnastics.

There is an excellent benefit to the cardio system in kite flying.

I will work on a video when I return home.

  7. I need a new line set. I'd like to get it at WSIKF if someone there makes the best in terms of equal lengths, etc.

    120 foot

    90#

    LGP

    Who is the best?

    Thanks.

    Bart

Theresa at The Kite Shoppe. I have gotten most of my linesets from her and never have had to adjust lengths. She prestretches and and ties off with quality. Plus she is just a cool lady.

  8. I have had a Zen for a few weeks now. Been flying inland in Colorado at 5000 feet. I have been flying the Zen much more than my 1.5's. I find it very nice on 30 foot lines in low wind. More of a street flying style. I never tried my Indoor outside, I like the Zen for that because if a gust comes up the Zen handles it well. The Indoor has much more float and lot less inertia. Catches are not easy with the Zen.

I am still not sure I will use the Zen for competition. I don't like its turns. It is hard to snap turn. I have not done a decent flick much lest a flack. When trying to move the Zen to a snappy beat in ballet it is not that responsive as compared to 1.5. There is a tendency to oversteer. That will be overcome with practice.

I love the way it looks. I got the Mardi Gras colors with lime verticals. It looks brilliant in the sky with back light. It has great presence.

Loves to fly backwards, and loves to axle. Multi Axles and cascading axles are very easy.

    Strong things.

  9. Connor Doran and Amy Doran on national TV, bringing tears to many eyes and opening the country's eyes to indoor kite flying. Scotty had some bad luck on his try last year, but if I had to guess, I'd bet Scotty couldn't be happier with these eventual results.

    Dave

    Portland, OR

I know Scotty encouraged and supported Connor. These kiting guys we coming along are really worth our investment of help and ecounragement. Just think how gutsy Connor was. Also he was really calm cool and very collected. Probably good thing he could not see the millions of people watching him thru those cameras.

What fun watching the judges. From well what is is this all about to hmmmm interesting, to wow I am feeling good, to this is really entertaining. Connor really did a job on them. Thru grit and grace.

    John

  10. Connor Doran made all of us in the "Rev family" very proud.

We have an east coast feed so have already seen America's Got Talent. For those on the west coast, be sure to watch the second hour.

    Good going Connor!

Connor did more for kite flying than anyone. He really blew them away. Look at the comments on YouTube and you see that people are wowed by this.

    Way to go Connor.

  11. Hi All.

everyone has there opinion, that was mine.

if you don't like it tough.

    all the best steve

That was the first time someone had the guts (courage in case you don't understand proper american) to try this in this environment. Probably some good lessons learned. Now that you have learned a little (wee little) you might have the hutspa to give it a try. Or maybe some young kid might beat you to it; keep watching.

  12. I want to thank the kiting family for all the support. Things are looking pretty good. I am heading into the mode of watching and being careful. There are still a few more doctor visits and finish up on some plastic surgeon. Yes I have a plastic surgeon. It is looking pretty good for us making it to Washington for WSIKF, Summer Heat and all the rest of the fun events. So I am really looking forward to seeing all the REVers. We will be staying until AKA.

And yes I could feel all the good vibrations coming from kiters. Thanks

    John

  13. My kid can fly a 1.5 indoors with 2wraps.....I'm SURE a ZEN would fly indoors no problem.

You might want to put pigtails on the endcaps of the wingtips and top of the uprights, This way you can bypass the bridal for indoor flying. Reverse flight indoors is easier without the bridal.

Lam Hoac flies a 1.5 indoors. No bridle of course. Direct connect. But then Lam thinks and probably can fly a vented indoors.

  14. 1. lay the sail flat and using regular old scotch tape, tape the tear together so the edges meet, just on one side. Now flip the sail over and very carefully apply CA medium hobby glue, like you would be 'welding' the tear together. Smooth out any excess with a Q-tip.....less is better than to much globbed up as when it dries it'll be too stiff. After 24 hours remove the tape. Go out and fly.

    T

Definately try number one. I did major damage to an indoor kite with a badly frayed tear, not as long as yours but very ugly. Theresa had me do the above technique and 4 years later I am still flying that kite.

  15. i need to replace the screening and the leading edge what is the material for leading edge sleve made out of thanks in advance

I replaced the screen on couple of my kites. Got the screening from The Kite Shoppe. It is the same screening as what rev uses. She could sell you about 10 or 12 inch wide strip that is long enough for the kite.

The job takes about 4 hours. I used sewing glue to hold the new screen in place before sewing. Not too difficult but takes a lot of patience. There are alot of stitches to rip out. Get yourself a good stitch ripping tool and take your time. It would be very easy to puncture your sail.

  16. Okay...Sorry if this is in the wrong place, or boring people...lol

I am taking a trip for medical reasons, and my better 3/4 is going on a work related trip at the same time. I am heading to Denver/Boulder Colorado via Seattle from March 3rd-March 17. She will be in Seattle for a couple days from March 15-17.

I will have an 18 hour layover in Seattle on March 3rd, so I'm renting a car for that time and need flying spots within a couple hours of SeaTac airport. I don't mind driving some. I know there are plenty of rev fliers in WaWa so I hope to get some replies to this. I want places that are most likely to have a bit of wind, as I'm not one of those people who can move around enough to fly without it...hence the medical trip. Maybe someone wants to come show me some "real" rev tricks that day...

Then I will be in the Boulder Colorado area. I have written to the kite club president found on the AKA site, but haven't gotten a peep from them. It's my "hometown" so I know my way around mostly. (Haven't been there in 6 years...) Funny...I played music right outside the door of Into the Wind for years and never was into kiting then.

I'm hoping to find people that are willing to fly no matter the temperature...Up here in Alaska, I fly no matter what, so hopefully SOMEONE will answer the call!

    --TaK

I live in Fort Collins and fly everyday no matter the weather. Might be indoors but I fly. There is not much of an organized club here but there are some flyers. So contact me with a message and we will see about getting together to fly. I heard through Robin M that you are a REV flyer. That is fine I do that too.

  17. JB

You list looks good. In the advanced I think there is a need for something about moving the kite with LE held at angle and being up. More precisely the motions in the Roman Numberal X in compulsories. That is one of the hardest manuevers I have encountered. Side sliding high in the window at an angle seems impossible. I also think side sliding period LE up is fairly difficult. The problem is getting the motion.

    John

  18. I'm "all in" on flying a fast and "twitchy" kite. A real contrast to what I get out slow glides and long end to end of the window movement.

Getting ready to "pull the trigger" and a II.

    Thanks for all the help.

    Fly on!!

A good way to improve your 1.5 precision and smoothness is to fly a II. When you get precise and smooth on a II a 1.5 is a snap. Clock work on a II is a thing to master.
