  1. Rev handles are made of stainless steel. Titanium has the advantage of being a lot lighter, though it's far more expensive. Even though my Ti handles are 17" across the gap, they are featherlight. I made a set out of stainless that are 15" across the gap and they weigh 10.5 oz for the pair; nearly double for the smaller handles.
  2. One thing that I've noticed about flying with tube tails (I use them in higher winds only) is they make the kite nearly Bow-tie immune. The extra drag on the bottom of the verticals prevents the tips from flipping around if you overdo the reverse inputs. It's kind of fun seeing how fast you can reverse the kite with tails on without worrying about bow-tying it.
  3. It looks to me that the foam grips are lower on the shafts than a Rev handle. I wonder if they'd feel/perform differently like that? I too was a bit concerned about merely larksheading the pigtails to the indents on the handles. My Titanium handles aren't nearly as kewl looking, but they function well. They are a lot lighter than they look- the pair of them weighs 5.7 oz.
  4. I sometimes fly with a pair of 100' Skywriter tails from Gomberg Kites. Apologies for the terrible photo- the winds were cranking and my one-handed flying with a Rev II is marginal at best.
  5. I love the Vented 1.5 and will often use Race Rods to fly it in lighter winds. Pull and speed is reduced and it seems to filter out a lot of oopses in my inputs, making it easier to fly precisely. If you can find one, I would recommend a Rev II as a nice kite for someone who likes a lighter pulling kite. It is very quick and a bit manic, but longer lines help. There is also a Vented Rev II which may be ideal as it slows the kite down and seems to be less twitchy. It doesn't need a gale to fly either; I often fly it once the winds get up around 10 knots or so. Pull is feather light and it's quite smooth for a smaller kite.
  6. Clover Point is a pretty small space- 120' lines just barely fit, with some wind directions. There's no way we could have 5-7 dual liners flying in that space at the same time unless we all had thousands of hours of practise together. Quads make it possible and I've gained a whole new appreciation for the Rev. The civilians 'get it' too. Many times we get nice comments from the passersby who watch. I can't remember that ever happening when I did my dual line flippy/floppy stuff.
  7. I first started flying Revs in the early '90s, but only did it a few times a year, usually at crowded kite festivals, where I could find room with short lines. I could fly a Rev, but was by no means very good at it. Flying with the islandQuad (iSquad?) boys at Clover Point has really kicked my butt. I've been flying Revs nearly exclusively ever since early January and flying nearly every day. I spend a lot of time flying in reverse and getting my speed control down. I've recently changed my grip from index fingers hooked around the top of the handle to just at the top of the foam. Something I'm working on, but can't do yet is pivot turns in reverse; working from the ground up.
  8. I've used a 3 piece leading edge in one of my Rev IIs used for light winds. I use a full length P-100 in the centre with ferruled shorter lengths of P-100 on the ends. The kite folds down to about 33", which may be too long for a motorcycle. I can't see any problem with your method though. The P-400 is a much stiffer stick. I'd only reinforce the lead kite's leading edge with .2400s and just use ferrule on the back kites.
  9. I did side-by-side comparisons with my old Vented 1.5 and a new B-Series Vented. Same line lengths, handles and frames in the same wind.I stood downwind and watched Terry fly both kites and the B-Series had a much deeper and rounder billow in the centre of the sail, where my older 1.5 had a relatively shallow and flat billow. Even with the same frames, my kite's leading edge was basically straight in the middle and angled off from the uprights out. The B-Series's leading edge was a smooth curve. I was impressed enough with the difference that I ordered a B-Series set that night.
  10. I don't know how scientific their figures are, but Into The Wind rates Laser Pro Gold as having 3% stretch and some of the budget brands at 4% stretch. 1% strech is an issue on 120' lines. I know the 120' set I made out of Tuf-Line Plus 80# Spectra took quite a few session to settle down, even after my usual break-in methods.
  11. Even if line only has 1% stretch, a length of 100' will stretch noticeably. When I make a new line set, I first sleeve both ends of the roll and then hook up one of my foil kites on a medium wind day and let it fly all afternoon. Every 5 or 6 sessions. I flip the top for the bottom lines, to help balance the amount of work the lines do.
  12. I was flying my Vented Rev II this afternoon and thought that I'd try making a short stack with one of my other Rev IIs. I put the Vented Rev II in front on the theory that the full sail has a larger wind window than the Vented, plus it's faster,so it wouldn't lag behind and maybe some of the wind going through the Vent's mesh would push on the back sail too. It flew very well, I'd like to add another.
  13. I regularly use Race Rods in my Vented Rev. It will fly a lot lighter than the stock 4 wraps and I appreciate them on those gusty days that have lulls of light winds. I've never measured the wind speed, but probably in the 6 mph range on the low end and a bit less with light wind techniques.
  14. I use 90# lines 99% of the time. If the wind picks up and the lines' whistling turns to death screams, I switch to a Vented 1.5, Rev II or if it's really honking, Vented Rev II. More wind than that and it's coffee time.

  16. Going back to March, 1997, an earlier version of the Rev 1.5. It has 5 panels, as opposed to Fenman's 7.
  17. I did a little detective work in the Internet Archives and found a similar pattern Rev 1.5 SLE on the January 25, 1999 version of GWTW Kites.
  18. Didn't the previous version of 1.5s have Mylar panels? Here's a pic of one of my older Rev 1.5s, dating back to '01. I have a feeling that your 1.5 panel layout was late '90s, but I could be wrong. I'm sure one of the experts will set us straight.
  19. That's very sad news- Jerry is a giant in the NW kite world. I wish him a speedy recovery and will fly kites with thoughts of him tomorrow.

    No offence if this sounds too basic, but you do have the vertical spars on the back of the sail, don't you?I've seen people with the spars in front of the sail a few times and the kite flies funny that way.
  21. I'd misplaced one of my kitebags with 8 or 9 kites in it for nearly a year and found it last week whilst looking for something else. There were 2 of my Rev IIs in it, including this custom. It's a real Revolution, not a home-made one.The fellow that I got it from said he bought it p at the Revolution office. Apparently it was a custom that was never picked up by the original customer.
  22. The winds were cranking this afternon, so I switched from my variable Vent 1.5 to my Rev II. I kept it on the 120' lines with the 13" handles. In that wind, with long handles it was very easy to over control it. They really magnify your inputs and the Rev II doesn't need much to overdo it. Taking a photo while flying was nearly impossible, even when I added the 100' tails to slow it down. Long handles have a lot of torque on your wrists in stronger winds too. I've never had sore wrists after flying a Rev II before.
  23. The weather was a lot nicer today- sunny and warm. Winds were off the mountains and a variable 15+ knots down to a very light 3-5 towards sunset. I started out with the 3 Wrap leading edge with 4 wrap verticals and later on with the Race Rods verticals. The gusts were probably edging 20 knots, but I kept the blockers on as I wanted to see if they'd stay on, as I haven't sewn them on yet. It's quite a nice kite as a mid-Vent with a solid but not too heavy pull; 'snappier' response than the full Vent, but without the Standard sail's 'twitchiness'. The winds faded quite a lot towards sunset and being stubborn, I kept flying the variable Vent, even though a Standard sail with Race Rods would've been easier to fly. I wanted to see what the low end was and I'd say it would go down to around 4 knots with the 3 Wrap LE & Race Rod verticals on 75' lines and SUL handles. I might just ask for a Custom B-Series mid-Vent, if it's possible. I like it that much.
